Conjunctivitis - "Pink Eye" or "Red Eye"

The most commonly treated eye disease in our office is "pink eye" or "red eye", which can be caused by various organisms or conditions such as bacteria, allergies, and viruses.  Our technical term for this condition is "conjunctivitis".  Because there could be micro-organisms involved, pink eye can be VERY CONTAGIOUS and it should be examined and treated as soon as possible.

If you experience any of the following symptoms, you may have conjunctivitis, and you should be examined immediately:
- red, irritated, or itchy eyes
- yellow or green mucous build-up
- wake up with eyelids "stuck together"
- light sensitivity
- wake up with sore, irritated eyes after accidentally sleeping in contact lenses
- you feel like there is something foreign in your eye(s)
- excessive burning and/or tearing.

Conjunctivitis is usually treated very easily and resolves within 3-4 days with the correct medications (depending on the cause of the conjunctivitis).  If you suspect that you may have conjunctivitis, call our office (714-979-2021) or stop in and we will fit you into our schedule, no matter how busy we are.  We will assess your condition, and, if necessary, start treatment immediately.  Or, if we diagnose something more serious, we will promptly refer you to the necessary specialist.
